FAQs About the Chlamydia Testing Service

How long will my kit take to be dispatched?

Kits are dispatched by first class post usually within one working day of your request – e.g. if you request a kit at 4pm on Friday, it will be dispatched by 4pm the following Monday.

What will the kit look like?

The kit is sent in a discreet, plain white plastic envelope, without any logos or ‘return to’ information on the outside. The kit fits through a standard letter box and does not need to be signed for.

Is it really completely free?

Yes - if you are over 18 and live in Oxfordshire, you are entitled to be tested for Chlamydia completely free of charge. This includes everything: the kit itself, all postage, laboratory fees and, should you test positive, treatment too.

How long after having sex should I take the test?

Chlamydia may not show up in tests immediately. To get an accurate result, we usually say to take the test 2 weeks after sex. If you have symptoms before the 2 weeks, please attend a Sexual Health Clinic ASAP.

How long do I wait for the result?

If you choose to receive your result by phone or text message, you should hear from us within 2 working days from when the lab receives your completed test kit. Results by letter may take a day or two longer. Everyone is notified of their result whether positive or negative.

What if I’m positive?

Don’t panic! Chlamydia is very easily and effectively treated with antibiotics – usually just a single dose. If your result is positive, we will ask you to ring in so we can arrange everything for you. You can pick up the antibiotics from a convenient location such as your GP surgery or local clinic. You don’t need to see a doctor or take a prescription to the chemist. We will also talk to you about anyone you have had sexual contact with over the last 6 months. It’s important to try and ‘break the chain’ of infection by giving people who may have been in contact with Chlamydia the chance to get themselves tested and treated too.
