FAQs About the Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea Testing Service

How long will my kit take to be dispatched?

Kits are dispatched by first class post usually within one working day of your request – e.g. if you request a kit at 4pm on Friday, it will be dispatched by 4pm the following Monday.

What will the kit look like?

The kit is sent in a discreet, plain white plastic envelope, without any logos or 'return to' information on the outside. The kit fits through a standard letter box and does not need to be signed for.

Is it really completely free?

Yes - if you are over 18 and live in Oxfordshire, you are entitled to be tested for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea completely free of charge. This includes everything: the kit itself, all postage, laboratory fees and, should you test positive, treatment too.

How long after having sex should I take the test?

Chlamydia/Gonorrhoea may not show up in tests immediately. To get an accurate result, we usually say to take the test 2 weeks after sex.

How long do I wait for the result?

If you choose to receive your result by phone or text message, you should hear from us within 14 working days. Results by letter may take a day or two longer. Everyone is notified of their result whether positive or negative.

What if I'm positive?

Don't panic! Chlamydia and/or Gonorrhoea are easily and effectively treated with antibiotics. If your result is positive, we will ask you to ring in so we can arrange everything for you. We will also talk to you about anyone you have had sexual contact with over the last 6 months. It's important to try and 'break the chain' of infection by giving people who may have been in contact with Chlamydia/Gonorrhoea the chance to get themselves tested and treated too.
